What is the best first self-drive route in Georgia?
For a first trip, combine Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti and Kazbegi. This gives city, wine country and mountains without forcing long transfers across the whole country.
When is the best time for a Georgia road trip?
April to June and September to October usually give the best balance of weather, light and open roads. Summer is stronger for high mountains, while winter needs more flexible replanning.
Do I need a 4x4 in Georgia?
Not for every route. Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti and Borjomi often work with a standard car in warm season, but Svaneti, Tusheti, snow and remote roads need more capable vehicles.
