Svaneti road trip: when to go and what car to rent

Svaneti is one of Georgia’s strongest regions, but it is not a quick side trip. You need time, weather buffer and the right vehicle.

How many days

Plan at least 4-5 days from Tbilisi: a long transfer to Mestia, one acclimatization day, Ushguli and the return drive.

The road to Mestia has improved, but Ushguli and side roads still require caution. A 4x4 gives more freedom and less stress.

Best season

July to September is the safest window. In spring and late autumn, snow and road damage can change the plan.
