Tbilisi to Batumi by car: best stops on the way

Planning checks before you drive

Roads	Check mountain passes, construction, sunset timing and realistic drive time, not only the map distance.
Weather	Keep a backup day for Kazbegi, Svaneti and other mountain routes where clouds or snow can change the plan.
Vehicle	Match the car to the route: standard roads can be easy, but winter, gravel and high valleys need more margin.
Stops	Keep only the stops that fit the route, parking, daylight and the driver’s energy. A shorter plan is usually better.

If the goal is simply the sea, leave early and limit stops. If you want western Georgia, sleep in Kutaisi or Borjomi.

Kutaisi is practical for caves, canyons and monasteries. Borjomi is better for forest, mineral water and a slower pace.

After an overnight flight or in bad weather, split the drive. Fatigue on Georgian roads is more dangerous than losing two hours.

How long is the drive from Tbilisi to Batumi?

Usually 5-7 hours without long stops. With Kutaisi, canyons or Borjomi, plan a full day or an overnight stop.

What should I see on the way?

Common stops include Borjomi, Kutaisi, Gelati, Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon and Okatse Canyon.

Do I need a 4x4 for Batumi?

Not on the main road. A 4x4 only matters if you add remote dirt-road detours.
